In seiner Residency im A-Trane bringt Nils Kugelmann neue Kompositionen genau dorthin, wo sie hingehören: auf die Bühne – wo sie für diesen Moment ihre endgültige Form finden. Nils Kugelmann, geboren in München und heute in Berlin lebend, hat in erstaunlich kurzer Zeit einen klaren künstlerischen Eindruck hinterlassen. Direkt nach seinem Masterabschluss erschien sein Debüt Stormy Beauty (ACT) im Trio: Preise, ausverkaufte Konzerte, viel Aufmerksamkeit. Die Süddeutsche Zeitung sprach vom „Bass-Berserker“, BR-Klassik vom „Mega-Talent“. Mit dem zweiten Trio-Album Life Score (ACT) wurde daraus mehr als ein Versprechen – nämlich eine Handschrift. Seither ist einiges passiert: Konzerte mit dem Trio in ganz Europa und darüber hinaus – von Italien, der Schweiz und Österreich bis nach England, Rumänien, Kosovo und Ecuador. Zuletzt war die Band im legendären Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London zu Gast. Parallel dazu zeigt Kugelmann weitere Facetten seines Spiels, etwa im Duo mit der Rising-star-Pianistin Shuteen Erdenebaatar auf dem aktuellen Album Under the Same Stars, das eine ruhigere, kammermusikalische Seite seiner Musik hörbar macht. In dieser Woche treffen neue Kompositionen auf ein Trio, das in den letzten fünf Jahren eng zusammengewachsen ist und gelernt hat, Risiko als Teil seines Sounds zu begreifen. Groove ist nicht nur eine Option, sondern ein Grundzustand. Und wenn etwas kippt, dann meist genau dorthin, wo es spannend wird. Was auffällt: Für Kugelmann hat der Kontrabass keine Nebenrolle, sondern eine erzählende Stimme im Zentrum seiner Musik. Born in Munich and now based in Berlin, Nils Kugelmann has made a clear artistic mark in a remarkably short time. Right after completing his master’s degree, he released his debut Stormy Beauty (ACT): awards, sold-out concerts, and wide attention followed. Süddeutsche Zeitung called him a “bass berserker”, BR-Klassik a “mega talent”. With his second album Life Score (ACT), this promise turned into a recognisable artistic voice. Since then, a lot has happened: concerts with the trio across Europe and beyond – from Italy, Switzerland and Austria to England, Romania, Kosovo and Ecuador. Most recently, the band appeared at the legendary Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London. With exceptional technical command, strong melodic expression, and high energy, he has quickly established himself as a key voice of the new jazz generation. Together, they expand the trio’s sound into new colours, constellations and spontaneous reactions – a night balancing familiarity and unpredictability.
